May 13 Is Tulip Day and I’ve Got Tulip Fever!

by Nomi Wagner

I am having serious withdrawal! Our amazing trip to Amsterdam and Paris was exactly a year ago … and I want to do it all over again! For 4 months before we went, and even while we were there, I searched the Internet and downloaded terrific travel information, history books, and reviews from other tourists. It really enhanced our experience, making this the most perfect trip Gerry and I have ever taken. I’ve written 3 other blog posts about the trip— June, July, and August 2013.

One of the books I read and recommend was Tulip Fever, by Deborah Moggach, “a tale of art, beauty, lust, greed, deception and retribution” (got my attention!) describing the period in Holland, during the 1600’s, when contract prices for tulip bulbs reached extraordinarily high levels and then suddenly collapsed.

After reading the book and seeing so much amazing Dutch art from that period, I was inspired to paint this antique rendition of tulips, from a photo I took in Monet's Garden in Giverny, France.

Gorgeous tulips were blooming in both Holland and France during our trip and they took our breath away. An especially glorious memory was our day trip from Amsterdam to the Keukenhof Gardens, the world’s largest flower gardens, where approximately 7 million flower bulbs are planted each year. I will let our photos tell the story. You’ll see why I want a do-over!
